What cheap VPS plans don’t tell you

  • Renewal prices. Many deals double when the first term ends. Check the renewal price before you pay.
  • IPv6-only plans. Some of the very cheapest plans have no IPv4 address, so many users and services can’t reach them.
  • Tiny RAM. 512 MB is fine for a VPN, but not for WordPress or Docker. 1–2 GB is the practical minimum for most uses.
  • Backups. Cheap plans rarely include them. Budget a little extra, or set up your own.

FAQ

Cheap VPS questions, answered

What is the cheapest VPS hosting?

RackNerd’s yearly promo deals are usually the cheapest real VPS hosting, at around $10 to $15 for a whole year. For monthly billing with no commitment, DigitalOcean and Vultr start at a few dollars a month.

Is a $1 a month VPS any good?

For light jobs like a VPN, a bot, a small website or learning Linux, yes. Do not expect it to run heavy databases or busy sites, and check the renewal price and whether it includes an IPv4 address.

Is there a free VPS?

Some cloud providers offer free tiers or trial credit, but they are usually limited in time or resources and require a credit card. A low-cost paid plan is simpler and more reliable for anything you care about.

What is the minimum RAM for a VPS?

512 MB runs a VPN or a tiny static site. 1 GB is a comfortable minimum for most small projects, and 2 to 4 GB is better for WordPress, Docker or databases.

Are cheap VPS hosts safe to use?

The providers listed here are established companies. Whatever host you choose, security mostly depends on you: use SSH keys, keep the system updated and turn on the firewall.

Is it cheaper to pay yearly?

Usually, yes. Yearly and multi-year terms carry the biggest discounts, but you pay up front and some prices rise at renewal. Monthly billing costs more but lets you cancel any time.
